Snowboard Instructor Qualifications in Canada

SnowSkool snowboard instructor courses take place in Banff and Big White - with both courses offering training up to Level 2 standard. For those wishing to train to become a snowboard instructor in Canada, you need to match-up to the standards set down by the Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors (CASI). CASI is a member of the International Snowboard Instructors Alliance (ISIA). As a result, CASI qualified instructors are entitled to work as snowboard instructors throughout the world - subject to achieving certain levels.

Candidates need to show an ability to ride in tougher terrain – moguls, crud and the freestyle park – as well as advanced carving turns. In terms of teaching, you will have to be able to teach switch riding, intermediate carving and advanced sliding turns.

CASI Park Instructor Level 1

Freestyle plays such an important part in every snowboarder’s on-snow life and so the CASI Park Instructor course is extremely popular amongst SnowSkool’s snowboard instructor trainees. Through practice and demonstration you will learn to teach freestyle snowboard skills - including straight airs, a selection of grabs and spins (180s and 360s, both front- and backside) and riding the pipe. Candidates will need to demonstrate that they can teach these skills to basic/ intermediate riders.

"I had a blast on SnowSkool back in 2007 and was stoked to get a job back at Big White 2007/08…strange to think I have now done five seasons there! I passed my 3 in 2008/09 and the plan is to get another couple of season under my belt, hopefully start teaching some of the prep weeks of the SnowSkool programme in Big White and then go for Level 4 in 2012/13."
