BASI Skiing Instructor Qualifications
SnowSkool France runs out of Méribel in the heart of the Three Valleys. Instructor trainees go for the ski instructor exams of the British Association of Ski Instructors (BASI). BASI is an active member of the International Ski Instructors’ Alliance (ISIA) - an organisation acting to provide equivalency between the various different governing bodies worldwide. BASI is well regarded within the ISIA because of its requirement that all instructor trainees undertake work experience as a ski instructor as part of the qualification.
Gain your ski instructor qualifications and explore the largest ski area in the world with SnowSkool France…pourquoi pas?!
BASI Level 1 Ski Instructor
The BASI Level 1 course is a five-day, entry level qualification to the BASI system. It allows successful candidates to teach on indoor and artificial slopes the world over. There are two components to the exam - a teaching component and a technical (skiing) assessment. In a nutshell, candidates must be able to confidently ski parallel turns in different terrain and in a variety of conditions. On top of the five-day Level 1 exam course, you will need to complete the Child Protection Module, a two-day first aid course and 35 hours of Ski School experience - only then will BASI award you the Level 1 ski instructor qualification. All this is included within the SnowSkool package.
SnowSkool BASI Level 1 Ski Instructor pass rate: 100%
Available on: All SnowSkool France ski courses
Employment: On all artificial and indoor slopes worldwide.
BASI Level 2 Ski Instructor
The BASI Level 2 exam is definitely a step up from the Level 1 exam - and armed with this, successful candidates can teach worldwide. The exam itself is ten days long and involves continual assessment. It comprises both technical skiing and teaching assessments. Candidates are expected to be able to confidently negotiate bumps, steeps, off-piste and variable terrain during the course of their technical assessment. In terms of teaching they are expected to be able to plan and execute ski lessons geared towards intermediate skiers up to and including linked carving turns. The BASI Level 2 ski instructor qualification is granted on completion of the Level 2 course and an additional 35 hours Ski School experience - this is scheduled into the 11 week SnowSkool course.
SnowSkool BASI Level 2 Ski Instructor pass rate: 95%
Available on: SnowSkool France 11 week course.
Employment: All countries (including France with Test Technique)
BASI Alpine Development Coach Level 2
This four-day course allows students to gain their race coach qualifications. After completing the course students will be able to coach 12-15 year olds, create a safe training environment for racers by setting appropriate courses and using appropriate drills, facilitate skill acquisition through appropriate drills and exercises, complete biomechanical analysis of skiers' movements and matching drills to improve performance, and give an introduction to practical strength and conditioning coaching.
Case Study: Instructor
Tom Lockyer
From: UK
Qualifications: BASI Alpine Level 1,2 & ISIA.
"I grew up ski racing on my local dry slope and during as many trips to the Alps as we could fit in! The BASI Club Instructor soon led onto the BASI Level 1 and Level 2. I managed to pick up some experience with a Ski School in Meribel and soon I was working towards my ISIA qualification. I passed my Test Technique (on second attempt) and got my ticket to work in France - which is where I am currently working today."
